In the tradition of his acclaimed artist mother, Jacqueline Johnston, who first taught Matt how to paint the landscape when he was a small child growing up in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea, he has painted the landscapes of all of the environments he has lived in throughout his life. His preference is for painting from life.
Below are some examples of oil paintings from Matt’s early life when he was Jackarooing in outback Queensland, his time in the UK in his early twenties, through to his life in the sub-tropics of Northern NSW and the rainforests of far North Queensland.
